My aikido teacher was telling us last night ‘Don’t fight the attack. Move around the point of contact’. I get that on an intellectual level – force can be beaten, power cannot – but training my body not to react when it is strongly grabbed is another thing. It reminds me of the coaching mantra…
‘WHAT YOU RESIST, PERSISTS’
Meaning we cannot change anything in our lives until we take responsibility for the situation we find ourselves in. That can be hard to do sometimes, yet when we are unhappy with an area of our life – the first step to change is to accept that we created it through our choices.
Resisting– laying blame at some other door other than your own, or showing a stiff upperlip and pretending everything is ok – will only lead to you repeating the experience.
Repeating negative experiences is therefore a good way to know if you are failing to take responsibility in an area of your life!
When you own an experience, you can learn from it and create a different outcome next time. Your thinking has changed, which as Einstein says in my first post, is the necessary precursor to a solution.
When I step on the mat again tomorrow night I will be looking in the mirror again. WillI be trying to force an outcome or using power? The answer will be both, but if I’m using a bit more internal power than last night I will be happy
